Throughout ‘Blooms and Bonds’, I immerse myself in the captivating world of plants, focusing particularly on those that I find intriguing, beautiful, or collect myself. I am drawn to the enchanting allure of orchids, specifically those native to Taiwan. This exploration is deeply rooted in my personal connection to home and family, as well as serving as a symbolic bridge between my own plant hobby and my mother’s recognition. She has always actively contradicted my plant keeping hobby insisting I quit and toss them out. That was until we found haraella retrocalla, otherwise known as ‘Taiwan fragrant orchid’, a miniature orchid that blooms large, brilliant, yellow flowers accented with a maroon or purple mark. She instantly insisted we get it as I realized it reminded her of home. Her connection with Taiwan and my obsession with plants had found a crossroad.
One of the original key aspects of my project involved the development of vibrant garments that mimic orchids flourishing. I envision a future where I am adorned in such color while actively tending to my own garden in the tropics. My project delves into the visual language of orchids and the vivid palette of colors they can possess. I research and carefully observe specific species of orchids and examine and translate their unique features to my artwork, encouraging viewers to appreciate the detail-rich beauty of the natural world.
I strive to convey not only my personal passion for plants but also to invite others into a world where nature and art converge. By celebrating the unique allure of orchids native to Taiwan and other plants that spark my interest, I hope to further my goal of promoting a deeper connection to the natural world and inspiring individuals to recognize the importance of preserving and cherishing our delicate ecosystems.
