Throughout ‘Blooms and Bonds’, I immerse myself in the captivating world of plants, focusing particularly on those that I find intriguing, beautiful, or collect myself. I am drawn to the enchanting allure of orchids, specifically those native to Taiwan. This exploration is deeply rooted in my connection to home and family. My mother had always contradicted my plant collecting hobby, until we found haraella retrocalla, otherwise known as ‘Taiwan fragrant orchid’, a miniature orchid that blooms large, brilliant, yellow flowers accented with a maroon central mark. She insisted we get it and I realized it reminded her of home. Our family's connection with Taiwan and my plant collecting hobby had found a crossroad.
One of the original key aspects of my project involved the development of vibrant garments that mimic orchids flourishing. I envision a beautiful future where one can tend to a colorful garden adorned in vibrant blooms. My project delves into the visual language of orchids and the vivid palette of colors they possess. I carefully observe specific species of orchids and translate their unique features to my artwork, encouraging viewers to appreciate the detail-rich beauty of the flowers of Taiwan.
